Summary0000139: A few awards that aren't meaningless
DescriptionAs much as I like the AR community, and particularly the artwork by EntryPoint, just having banners for awards voted on by fewer than three hundred ed2k users seems somewhat irrelevant. Even 'BEST ANIME OVERALL' only had 299 voters, and the made-for-films 'quick watch' award only managed 195 interested people. As the code is in place, it'd be nice to expand it to a few more industry awards, rather than just fan stuff for the past two years. Below is a list of two awards by Mainichi that I think would be nice in the db.
Additional InformationThe Oufuji Noburou Award began in 1962 and is given for animation excellence at the Mainichi Film Concours (run by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper). Most of the winners from 1979 onwards have reached the west, and are listed in anidb.

Then the stop-ghibli-winning-all-the-time award (according to the dodgy ANN article here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=6034). Basically it's a slightly more mass market anime film award, seems to have started in 1990.

アニメーション映画賞 (Animation Eiga Shou -> Animation Film Award)

2003 ...ditto
...then Pellas I notice has:
2004 雲のむこう、約束の場所 (Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho) (aid:469)

Some years animated films have won the 日本映画大賞 (Japanese Film Grand Prize) or 日本映画ファン賞 (Japanese Film Fan Award), but possibly not enough to bother with.

Final issue will be making a couple of banners for these, I haven't found any nice graphics to scrounge yet.

Found a page to fill in some of my gaps:
http://www.mainichi-msn.co.jp/geinou/cinema/eicon/etc/sakuhin.html

So for the mainstream award:
1989 Majo no Takkyuubin (Kiki's Delivery Service) (aid:286)
2001 Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (aid:112)
2002 a Crayon Shin-chan movie (nidb)
2003 Toukyou Godfathers (aid:1217)

Oh, and the reason I started thins in the first place, the Oufuji Noburou in 2004 went to Mind Game (aid:1834)

I'll probably add a few of the nidb bits over time, in the hope someone gets interested and subs 'em.

how well reknown are those awards?

Er... what do you want? Some site in english that says "these are really important japanese film awards"? If you want a comparision, the oscars have been running a short (animated) award since 1932, but only started doing animated feature in 2001. Mainichi is the oldest newspaper in Japan (slightly tacky history: http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/annuncio/company.html ). It's an industry award really, rather than a big mainstream event. Probably worth adding the Japan Media Arts animtion awards too, much younger, but so mainstream they have a version of their site in english: http://plaza.bunka.go.jp/english/festival/backnumber/index.html

No one awarding 'Blood the last vampire' will get my respect. Anyway, I think is better to keep Community/Statistical awards than some we don't know/participated.

BTW, I think the current banners for awards (2003/2004/AniDB) are really intrusive for AniDB anime entries and would like to see or a pop-up for them or another minimalistic style (like icons with the award title).

Dude, you (plural) just gave 5 awards to elfen lied, and think you (plural) have more authority than a japanese film prize that's been running since ww2 ended? Sure Blood is pretty sucky, but at least it doesn't have pissing kids.

I was saying that if I have to choose one or the other I choose the already established ones. If we will add this to the already existing ones then we need to change the way awards are handled and I think the Icon + Award Type Text is a good solution.

If people think Elfen Lied deserves this kind of support then nothing can be done (I really don't). Most probably, but not for sure, you would have seen the same results if this magazine would have done something like we did.

I think you misunderstand. This isn't a magazine reader poll, it's an industry award. Nor am I saying scrap AR, just I think adding a few more... long term? awards might be nice. Sure, it's arthouse rather than populist hollywood leaning, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Click the Japan Media Arts link I gave for another more hollywoody one. Or just try reading my posts instead of just being a prat.

Just because you want to put Mind Game up to our asses doesn't mean that is more trusted. Anyway I don't care unless we add another big banner. BTW, Mind Game has only 50 votes. And since when we follow the Japanese rankings? I think we have our own opinion on anime and like it or not AR and AniDB awards are the image of that.

ahahhaa, you are funny. Actually what I really want to do is put Ghibli up to your asses (whatever you think that means). Seeing as you want to focus on the number of votes, I'll point out that many ghib films have less than 500, whereas something recent like HnR has over 2500 total. Japanese animation has many decades of history, and I think people should be encouraged to explore that a little, rather than just watching the latest stuff. The current awards, from 2003-2004, don't do a very good job with anime as a whole, so I'm suggesting an impartial third party award. Oh, and it's worth noting that while a lot of people just won't like Mind Game at all, I think pretty much everyone can get something from Ghib films.

I don't really get why you're being such an ass here. You just annoyed because I mocked the participation levels for the AR awards, or do you genuinely believe that a renowned animation award that's been running for over 40 years is meaninless? Or are you worried about the extra load from two new banners? (notably one per anime, not 5) At any rate, because you've kicked up a fuss for no good reason, I doubt this'll get done any time soon.

First, you discredited AR awards as a whole and even as I don't like the recent outcome I understand that is what the COMMUNITY likes/thinks is better, not you and not me but the COMMUNITY as a whole. Fanboys? Yes, of course... as you with Mind Game, but that's another problem.

Second, you insulted me when I never said anything about you until that comment. Just pointed that I don't trust those awards more than the AR/AniDB ones. That doesn't mean I'm totally against not adding them and there is where you made the mistake. Having them as another option is ok as I said before, but then it should be changed the way we show them with big banners to a less intrusive way.

If you can't stomach a comment against your opinions you're really in problems. I think it might have been a pain for you the AR awards. LOL

At last, do you really think I don't want to promote Ghibli movies? Look at the thread I maintain at AR Forum. Look at my votes for such movies. I'm not against this (adding them without taking nor reducing the other awards) but you jumped because a minor comment I made as it was a crusade.

You're being a prick as always.

PD: and your comment about me giving 5 awards to Elfen Lied can't be more wrong. I don't like that anime nor even voted for it besides the Fanservice category. I think it was made only to please fans and that's why I voted that.

Your first comment here was against the award as a whole, because of a particular title that won it one year. I responed in kind, in an even more childish manner. But as you seem to have taken it personally, I've resolved the ambiguities of the english language in that post for you. At any rate, this is gone far beyond actually being useful debate, so unless either of us has any particularly stunning comment to make, we may as well desist.

No it wasn't. Besides the wrong spelling of 'than' (it was 'that' in the original note), I said that is better to keep the AR/AnidDB ones than those. That doesn't mean both can't coexist.

That same Tokyo Godfathers you discredited in your report description is the one who won the mainstream award for 2003 so I don't think the community is that wrong as you think.

AR/AniDB wrong = NO
Those Awards are Better (IMO) = NO
We can add them = YES (*)

(*) if we change the way awards are shown in AniDB. Some titles are a real mess with awards from 2003, 2004, AniDB and now maybe others!?

Well, you can chalk me up for the same NOs and YES that you just gave, so fun but pointless argument all round. As for coexistance and crowdedness worries, I think the only overlap is AR 2004 for Godfathers with its Animation Film Award 2003, which is less than the 6 or so banners a couple of titles have at the moment. (Oh, and probably Makoto will win some things AR 2005). Might be a few more if Japan Media Arts gets added. You could request a profile option to hide award banners, if you like. Probably best in a new tracker item.

sounds reasonable so far.
are there any good images we could use for these awards?
or do we have someone who would create some?
(same size as the ARC-award images would probably be best)

and we would need an ARC-award style forum post where all awarded titles are listed which we can then link to once someone clicks on the award image.

Right, list is underway, my main problem is BBCode doesn't make it very easy to layout in any kind of sensible manner. HTML is totally disabled on anidb forum it seems. Had a brief bash at a banner myself, which only went to prove I need to pressgang somone who's not a complete amateur into doing it for me... ;_;
