Summary0001612: New anime relation for entity: Protagonist
DescriptionCurrently there are 4 different anime relation types for characters:
1. cameo appearance in
2. secondary cast in
3. appears in
4. main character in

1, 2, 3 are fine, but 4 is somewhat problematic. Especially in the "perpetual ongoing" animes, that have arcs and side stories with different main chars or episodical ones. For example Bleach (aid=2369) now has 2 main chars (whereas initially there should be at least 5 original), but someone who added Abarai Renji made him main too and even fought aginst mod about it http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creq&do.showhist=1&creq.id=1853991
Or even worse. NGE (aid=22): It may appear to someone, who didn't watch it, that Ayanami Rei is the the very main character there, but it appears so only because of alphabetical order.

How about to add a "protagonist" relation, that would automatically add char to the top of the list and once and for all settle all debates? The "main character in" should be renamed in "main cast in". Of course protagonist would inherit all properties (if they exist in DB) of main cast, but would be still superior to it.
It may be even rational to make a restriction on only one protagonist per anime. So for example, none of the Cowboy bebop's main chars could be a protagonist (only main cast in), but the Bebop Crew charid=10212 could. Currently "organization" type of char is restricted to "appears in", but how about to lift it? If someone would try to add a yet another protagonist char to an anime - he would receive denial message with a suggestion either to demote the current protagonist to a main cast (in that case a mod approval should be required) or with a suggestion to reconsider his view on the to-be-added-char.

I think there's a lot of merit in this idea, particularly for series with a large cast where certain characters should be placed a level higher than everyone else. For LOGH and Shiki, it's done using the existing 3 levels, but there clearly needs to be more differentiation.

While I understand the point of this, there are some issues here.
-if we use protagonist, people will also want antagonist, which makes sense
-some shows might have two or more characters that are equally important (e.g. Urusei Yatsura has Ataru and Lum; Nana has two Nanas; Powerpuff Girls Z has the three girls), so marking only one character would be impossible. And using the name 'protagonist' for more than one character would be literally wrong.

Having an antagonist relation is not a bad thing - it's all about categorization in the end. Even further: if we have mecha and vessel char-types - then why not a monster of the week relation for NGE angels, for exaple (thus promoting the char-tag to full scale relation). But which concerns the multiple main characters - they just should be leaved as "main cast in" or if they are already grouped in an organization char-relation - the org gets the relation. Maybe there should be some mod-forced restriction to disable any particular title having a protagonist (to avoid people fighting over their favorite chars). The real problem is the chars with multiple entities/personalities - but they are rare, usually not the main cast and one personality/plot role is dominating. so it can be worked out.

It could be renamed "lead character" which would make it neutral. It doesn't need to be restricted to one character either - a maximum figure of 3-5 could be enforced.

This would still lead to gray areas situations on whether characters are main or lead.

Examples:
Sailor Moon: while Sailor Moon is definitely lead, I'd argue that the rest of the senshi aren't, while some would say they are. Then there's also Tuxedo Kamen that has a somewhat greater role than the other senshi...
Genshiken: Which of the members are main and which are lead?
xxxHolic: is Doumeki also lead? If yes, then how about Himawari?
Baccano: what is this I don't even...

There's also the case where an anime is a collection of multiple partially or completely unrelated stories (e.g. Kita e Diamond Drops, Ayakashi Ghost Stories, Anderson Monogatari). Does each story get it's own lead characters?

Not saying the idea is bad, just that there's going to be a lot of debate around this just as there was between main and secondary...
