Summary0000103: Foreign titles entries for Episodes and Animes
DescriptionIf a file is in Japanese with Spanish subtitles, why does it need to be with an English anime title and an English episode title?

Files should be named according to the language of the subs/dubs.

1) Add a field for foreign official titles in French, Spanish, Polish, German, ...
2) Add a field for foreign episode titles in French, Spanish, Polish, German, ...
3) Change the filenames to use in priority the language of:
- the subs
- the dubs (if anime/episode title in previous language not available or if no subs)
- English (if anime/episode title in previous language not available)

Please describe how releases with several selectable subtitle and dub languages should be handled.

I think the DB should be kept mainly in Japanese/English. That exp allows to index foreign language files is nice but having the complexity of managing multiple languages is too much. Each day AniDB is growing bigger and slower... I would like to avoid that because the day we lose the generous hosting we have now the day we won't be able to get a decent hosting for it (of course without paying $400 a month).

Elberet:
For multi-subs and multi-dub, three possibilities:
1) Easiest, you take the first language
2) Or you display both languages
3) Or you use user preferences

Except that there's no possibility - yet - to define which the "first" language is.

> 2) Or you display both languages
Both? I'm talking about releases such as anime.fin's Elfenlied here, which comes with English, German, Slovenian, Portuguese and Danish subtitles...

> 3) Or you use user preferences
Default language for filenames, huh?

Seriously, I doubt that many users would make use of that feauture. Very few actually keep the filenames that AniDB suggests in ed2k links.

>If a file is in Japanese with Spanish subtitles, why does it need to be with an English anime title and an English episode title?
Because AniDB is an english website.

I think implementing something like this would be overkill. Most AniDB users would never use it anyway.
Maybe I'll add an additional episode name "other" someday and allow users to enable that title in their profile. However, it would probably not be possible to select this on a per sub/dub language basis.

there are not much foreign languages that sub anime, but i can see that it's growing so maybe we should, but it's not for me to decide wether or not it should be added

Infortunatly, AniDB isn't open source, so I cannot create a foreign version of it. And I do not have computer knowledge to program it myself.

But if anybody is willing to create an open-source multi-language anime database, please contact me for French translation. :)

The other and synonyms have been abused, wrong/joke information is easily entered and even if the mods come across it, if it is in a language they cannot understand it can be abused, here is a comprehensive proposal for a new language system. Even if the languages are limited to what the mods can understand, it ensures that titles are validated and handled properly.

Supported languages should be limited to the languages the mods know. That is rather narrow, so they will probably need to have volunteers that will verify specific languages, so the supported languages would expand to include those... This way a user cannot complain about a language not being supported, if it is not supported then they can offer their assistance...

Here is a proposal for a new language system.
1) All supported languages (as defined by there are mods/users to verify those languages) will be listed as being able to add languages.
2) Language Other will no longer be able to be added.
3) When a Title/Synonym/Short Name for an anime OR episode, it is added with a flag of unverified.
4) Unverified Titles will be listed as unverified (or maybe even hidden)
5) The mods can mark the titles as verified
6) If there is no longer a mod/user available to verify a name, then that language is flagged so that users can no longer enter titles with that language. Existing verified records for that language would remain.

Other niceties:
7) Language verifiers are known by the system and they have the power to approve/modify/reject titles in the languages they support
8) Titles are creqed independantly from other data in the record.
9) In the cases of more than one language verifier for a language, changes made by a language verifier should be validated by another one.
10) Validation of proper encoding (or even automatic encoding) should be done and made consistent. Currently the anime titles are checked but the episode titles are not... Also English does not allow non-ASCII characters (even encoded), so I cannot do Pokemon properly.
