| Description | Hi. First of all, I want to THANK you guys for the incredible work you've been doing through the years (I'm here since 2003!). You guys keep amazing me. About the feature request, I would like to know what anime are highly ranked by users in my age group (I'm already 39!), because the plain voting system doesn't seem to help much in finding out what anime I might find interesting. By sex of the voter would also help. I know it's difficult to characterize people by those factors, but you'd be surprised in that you'll find yourself much better represented once you find your group of belonging. I mean, I might not match the 35-45 male group; I might match the 20-25 female group instead, who knows, but certainly I won't match best the 12-18 "I love punchs and kicks" male group (not that there's anything wrong with punchs and kicks, obviously). Think it as a new tool; some might find it useful, some might not. I know that not many users enter their age or sex in their profile, but there's plenty of users that do; that should suffice. BTW, there used to be an automatic recommendation tool which didn't work very well for me. It kept bringing on anime I specifically put in my black list (Full Metal Alchemist), and I had a pretty long list of votes myself to take a guess from. | ||||

Thanks zeromind for pointing that out. Well... I have now read the discussion you pointed out in the forum. The thing is, so what if some users lie about their gender or their age? AFAIK, those items are completely optional in AniDB, so I think there's some degree of accuracy in that info. In any case, all statistics are like that, you know. The fact that demographics aren't reliable doesn't make them completely useless. The polls you see on TV or any media are like that too. When you read statistics about "do women cheat more often than men", do you really think that everyone asked did answer with the truth? Even the rating system is biased; think about those who rate with "1", which is in most cases unrealistic. Will we eliminate the rating system as well? I don't know how many accounts do have birthdate information, but if AniDB make that tool available, many may join in and add their data. So, administrators, please think about us people who believe in those tools, even if you are not so sure about them. Perhaps you could put it "under test" for a while and see what happens (although I know that every change to the site is a pain in the ass; you gotta go through database, UI, all CSS flavors, etc.). |
