Summary0002175: Drop the quality field for file entries
DescriptionAs the description in the wiki says, this field is very arbitrary and in the eye of the beholder, yet it is quite cumbersome to change. So for most files, quality is set to whatever the submitter thought it should be or, usually, the default for one of the templates. That's why most TV and web rips have 2½ stars, while DVD and BD rips usually have 3 even if they are a badly filtered mess.

If you look e.g. at the first episode of Trigun (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=ep&eid=315), you see DVD rips ranging from 2002 to today, mostly tagged as very high or high quality. Nobody would consider Psychlo-Anime's 512x384 DivX 3 rip anywhere near good in this day and age. But nobody is going to enter 26 creqs and maybe argue with a mod whether the files should be low, very low or eyecancer either. And enter the same number of creqs for the KAA release, because it only deserves medium, etc. Perception of quality changes over time, but the way this field is handled is simply not suited for this.

For these reasons, I think we should deprecate and then outright drop the field. Anime group votes and comments serve the purpose of rating a release's quality far better (even though they share the quality over time problem for older votes). And the fields for format, resolution and particularly the source mostly imply what the quality field says right now.

The only case where I consider the data in the quality field to be potentially useful is for files tagged as corrupted. Some of these should be linked to their original or fixed versions through file relations. Others however seem to be just nitpicking over a single frame (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=file&fid=336017).

Aha, finally found the creq I saw with some relevant discussion on this topic: http://anidb.net/c6389704

I haven't seen this supposed convention being followed on any shows consistently, and it isn't documented anywhere either. If we went by that, would that mean a 480p BD rip gets 2½ stars while a (potentially older) DVD rip gets 3? That doesn't make any sense. Or should all the old DVD rips get dropped in quality if there is a BD? That would be inefficient.
(In some cases, the BDs are also terrible upscales and should have lower quality ratings than the DVDs, e.g. 3x3 Eyes or Blue Submarine No. 6)

The quality ratings on those UTW-Mazui files are also only comparable among each other, but not with other groups' releases. The v1 and v2 (which already get marked as deprecated files anyway) have been downgraded for lacking embedded fonts, worse typesetting and being based on a Share raw. Yet we have Share raws for the same episode at 2½ or even 3 stars.

I concur to everything OP said.
And quality being always subjective, it is better set through votes than edits.
Any staff opinion on this ?

Voting definitely won't happen on a file-level basis; that is asking for trouble.

You can already vote for a given anime-release, however; see screenshot "capture.png" I just attached to the ticket.

@CDB-Man
That's out of this ticket's scope. And I'm pretty sure everyone was talking about anime group votes.

The way I read it, Musaran is suggesting that qualid be a voteable value on a file level basis. I am saying in message 0004037, that this will never happen, and to go use the existing animegroup votes instead.

I'm not seeing what's out of scope; I didn't even suggest anything.
